Hi, Larry. Just wanted to let you know that I reposted your weblink on egg production, from a prior episode, on Meryl Nass' Sub and it got several likes. Very interesting that the feed for small and backyard producers was bought by Purina/ Land O' Lakes and production stopped right when their mega-hen battery came online. Thanks for doing all this research, I'm finding many useful things.

I changed the feed to a mulit grain goat food but still no eggs. It came from Hirsch Feed. Gates is probably in that rat nest somewhere since he is working on an "egg substitute." Damn demon.

Hi, Mike. If you're a new chicken owner, you might not know that chickens stop laying when there aren't enough hours of sun in a day. Commercial producers get around this with time-sensored lights but I've never bothered with my backyard brood. They also get around this by only keeping hens around for 2 yrs, so they never molt and go dormant. Sorry if I'm saying what you already know--I felt like the video should have clarified this, to make sure they weren't an easy target for discrediting.

Thanks. One of my chickens did molt. I have had them for almost 3 years. Every now and then they go for periods when they lay less or don't lay but this has been going on for 6 months.
I have been watching to see what feed other people switch to that have success but I have not seen anybody name a successful brand of feed yet.
Brian uses his chickens to fertilize and prepare different parts of the land at different times. He has a chicken mobile he uses to move them around. Their feed is totally natural and their eggs taste better than any chicken eggs I have ever tasted. He is almost completely self sufficient and does not generally need to do things like buy feed except in very rare circumstances. Maybe something like this might be viable for you?
I have a fenced in back yard and they own the back yard. It was full of St. Augustine grass when I put them back there but they scratched it down to the last blade of grass. Not much for them to eat back there unless some bugs wander into the yard so I have to feed. I will check out that permaculture site for some tips. Thanks :)
